A Norwegian violinist will give a special concert in Minneapolis on November 19

GRANITE FALLS, Minn. — A concert with the music of Olav Luksengård Mjelvawill be held on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. at the Danish American Center in 3030 West River Parkway in Minneapolis. The concert is sponsored by Twin Cities Scandinavian Social Dance with Renee Vaughan and Carol Sersland and Pioneer PBS. The first to arrive can go through the doors at 6:30 p.m. to take their seats. Olav will first perform on solo fiddle and hardingfele with a dance to follow from 8-9pm. Interested spectators can pay at the door. Admission is $10 – cash only. Olav Luksengård Mjelva is a musician, dancer, producer and artist from Røros in the Sør-Trøndelag region of Norway. He learned the violin at age seven and years later began playing the Hardanger violin. It usually occurs with a variety of constellations including SVER, The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc which is a trio specializing in Norwegian, Swedish and Shetland fiddle music as well as the Rydvall/Mjelva duo alongside Swedish Nyckelharpa player Erik Rydvall. Most recently, Olav featured his music in Amazon’s hit series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022).
Pioneer PBS previously featured Olav in a Pioneer PBS special called The Devil’s Instrument (20220). The film explores the culture surrounding the Hardanger violin and interviews the carpenters who make the violin, the musicians who play it and the dancers who turn it against the backdrop of the beautiful Norwegian landscape. you can watch it here.
Olav will also perform in the Grand Marais on Friday November 18 at noon for the world premiere of “Built with Love”, a new feature documentary from the award-winning director. PBS Pioneer Postcards.
