Associate Director of Study Abroad Rebekah Anaya selected for Fulbright-Hays Seminar in Norway
MACON – Mercer University Associate Director of Study Abroad Rebekah Anaya is among 16 American post-secondary educators recently selected to attend a Fulbright-Hays Seminar Abroad summer program in Norway.
The programme, titled ‘Typically Atypical: Understanding Modern Norway’, will run from June 15 to July 17 and will provide a broad introduction to the basics of Norwegian history, culture, art and literature, politics and governance, among other topics.
“I am honored to have been selected for the Fulbright-Hays program in Norway,” said Anaya. “As well as being able to provide our teachers with country-specific suggestions for Norway, where we currently do not offer programs, the program will allow me to provide teachers with new contacts abroad, as well as ideas for new courses focusing on globalization, national identity, immigration and education”.
Anaya is associate director of study abroad in Mercer’s Office of International Programs and coordinator of the university’s Peace Corps Readiness Program.
Prior to joining Mercer, she worked as the manager of a tutoring company, taught English in Spain for three years, and ran study abroad programs in England, Costa Rica and Cuba. She also worked with students from Northern Ireland on a peacekeeping mission between Protestants and Catholics. As an undergraduate, she participated in six study abroad programs.
She is fluent in English and Spanish and has traveled, worked and studied in 26 countries on six continents.
Anaya holds a master’s degree in international education, politics and management from Vanderbilt University and a bachelor’s degree in hospitality and tourism management from Purdue University.
Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad offers American arts, social sciences, and humanities educators the opportunity to participate in short-term seminars abroad to enhance their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. This summer, seminars will be offered in the Philippines, Hungary, Norway and Germany.
Each thematic seminar offers educational lectures and interactive cultural activities specially designed for primary, secondary and post-secondary educators, including visits to local schools and organizations and meetings with education administrators, government officials , decision-makers, teachers and students. Participants build on their experiences during the program to create new programs or enhance existing cross-cultural programs for use in their American classrooms and school systems.
