Canneseries highlights “Gomorrah”, “Sisi” and “Around the world in 80 days” in the fourth international edition

Sky Original’s fifth and final season of “Gomorrah”, German-language RTL Group and Beta Film’s “Sisi” and Canal Plus’ hip-hop theme “All The Way Up” will join – rightly so – Slim, directed by David Tennant Film + Television / Federation co-produced “Around the World in 80 Days” for an edition with international accents of Canneseries, which is played from October 8 to 13.
In parallel with Mipcom before returning to its traditional berth of April in 2022, this year’s fourth edition will spotlight nine countries in its ten-series long competition, but with a limited American presence.

In addition to these four aforementioned series, all played out of competition, this year’s most publicized competition premieres include the Cold War thriller “Totems”, produced by Gaumont and broadcast by Amazon Prime, a French-Spanish-Czech co-production featuring starring Niels Schneider, Lambert Wilson and Ana Girardot, and âLimbo⦠Until It’s Overâ, the latest series from Argentinian hit-makers Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn, produced and broadcast by the Latin American platform Star Plus at Disney.
Of the 10 series selected, two come from Israel. Co-created and directed by “Our Boys” creator Tawfik Abu-Wael and commissioned by public broadcaster Kan, “Unknown” follows a group of at-risk youth accused of sexual assault, while “Sad City Girls” from Hot cable service, courtesy of Shir Reuven and “Zero Motivation” director Talya Lavie, and sheds a bittersweet light on young adult friendship.
Thrillers will be served in various nuances and flavors, from United Media’s Serbian crime drama “Awake”, which finds a detective haunted by a series of disturbing suicides, to the religious-minded “Christian” of Newen / Sky / Lucky Red, who follows a violent executor beset with stigmata and the Vatican postulator on his heels.
Released by NRK and ARTE and sold by Banijay, Norwegian âCountrymenâ follows four disbelievers who, quite unexpectedly, end up becoming the founders of the country’s first halal cheese-making company. Offering a rather different Nordic outlook, the Finnish series aired by Elisa Viihde, sold by the Federation, “Mister 8” follows a CEO who really has it all – including a different spouse for each day of the week. Problems arise when she meets, well, sir 8.
Rounding out the competition, Russian production 1-2-3 “Dreams of Alice”, which follows a young woman seeking a new start in an isolated and somewhat mystical Nordic community, and “The Allegation” in Germany, a film based on a true story legal drama directed by “Babylon Berlin” star Peter Kurth, broadcast by RTL VOX affiliate and sold by Fremantle.
Festival guests include award-winning filmmaker and former Haitian Minister of Culture Raoul Peck, who will be this year’s guest of honor, Danish “Game of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who will head the long jury. date, and American actress Connie Britton, who will accept the festival’s Icon Award. Meanwhile, recent Britton collaborator “The White Lotus” Mike White will attend an online date.
