It is Carlsen-Duda, So-Mamedyarov, Aronian-MVL, Radjabov-Artemiev and Giri-Nakamura today that the $ 300,000 of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour final begins. The event is played online at the chess24 playing area, but there is a hybrid element, as Magnus Carlsen, Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Anish Giri all come together in one place in Oslo. Peter Leko returns for comment and will be joined by Lawrence Trent, with Danny King and Simon Williams to follow for subsequent rounds. Don’t miss all of the action here on chess24 starting at 11:00 am ET / 5:00 pm CEST / 8:30 pm IST!
After 9 events over the span of 11 months, the $ 1.6 million Meltwater Champions Chess Tour is close to reaching its conclusion, with 10 players competing for the overall title. You can check out all the pairings below.
This is a round robin tournament, so all 10 players face each of their rivals once in 9 rounds, each match starting with 4 quick games where players have 15 minutes for all their moves plus a 10 second increment to from move 1 If the match ends in quick chess, the winner gets 3 points and the loser gets 0.
It is only if the game is tied 2: 2 that we get a knockout blitz, with two 5 + 3 games. If there is still a tie, there is only one Armageddon match, where White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black. There are 2 points for the winner of a playoff and 1 for the loser.
The action is online, but with three players, Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri and Jan-Krzysztof Duda competing from Oslo. Two of them meet in the first round because it is about Carlsen-Duda.
As you can see, the world champion has a solid lead over the Polish no. 1 in the quick matches they have played on the Tour so far, but Jan-Krzysztof scored the huge blow by beating Magnus in the FIDE World Cup semi-finals. “I don’t take revenge by beating people once!” Magnus said after beating his rival in three games on day one of their Aimchess US Rapid quarter-final. He quickly did the exact same thing on Day 2, but when will the revenge end?
Jan-Krzysztof starts the match with a whopping 16.5 point gap between himself and Magnus, as Tour points scored during the season were converted into bonus points to start the final. He is always up for the challenge!
Magnus starts off with a 4-point lead over his closest rival Wesley So, as he tackles what is almost certainly his last event before the World Championship game.
Anish Giri, who is 11 points behind Magnus, is also in Oslo for the event, and is starting his campaign against Hikaru Nakamura.
Wesley So, who takes on Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in the first round, is by far the best-placed player to push Magnus for the $ 100,000 top prize, but Levon Aronian, who starts against his good friend and rival MVL, could quickly enter the contention. if the first two stumble.
It’s not just the first place that counts either!
Revealing the final stages of the tour, Russian Vladislav Artemiev, 23, will face 2019 World Cup winner Teimour Rajabov in their first meeting on this year’s tour.
Meltwater Champions Chess Tour picks up steam after Mastercard has been announced as official partner of the Tour, with Magnus Carlsen joining Lionel Messi and Naomi Osaka as Global Mastercard Brand Ambassador.
There is a twist to the Tour finals, with the chance to collect some of the best moments of the Tour and even digitally own the only copy of the trophy other than the one given to the winner.
What is on offer will become clear when the collections start to be available!
