Southern Orange, 10 October 2021 – The GK Chesterton Institute for Faith and Culture at Seton Hall University is pleased to announce an online conference entitled âCollecting Chesterton: A Conversation with a Geekâ. A conversation with Chesterton bibliographer Dr Geir Hasnes and The Chesterton Review editor Dr Dermot Quinn. Moderated by Ms. Gloria Garafulich-Grabois, Director, GK Chesterton Institute for Faith & Culture. Genuine love of books has nothing to do with intelligence or stupidity any more than any other genuine love, “said GK Chesterton.” It is a quality of character, a freshness, a power of pleasure. , a power of faith. “Books exist. First and foremost to read, of course, but they can also be savored as things in themselves, full of history, personality and original beauty. As once said. American author and journalist Vincent Starrett, âCollecting books is one way to collect happiness.â There are few places happier than a private library.
Norwegian scientist Geir Hasnes would agree. Over many years as a bibliographer he gained unparalleled knowledge of Chesterton’s enormous output, tracking down dates and places of publication with the zeal of a brilliant private investigator. In the process, he also assembled one of the largest collections of Chestertoniana in the world today.
In this online conversation with Dr Dermot Quinn, Editor-in-Chief of The Chesterton Review, Mr Hasnes will discuss the challenges and joys of working as a bibliographer and show some items from his extraordinary collection. We invite you to join us for this conversation.
About the speakers
Geir Hasnes is Assistant Professor of Cyber ââEngineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Mr. Hasnes has worked on a comprehensive bibliography of GK Chesterton for which he received the Chesterton Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Chesterton Society in 2006. He lives in Konsberg, Norway.
Dermot Quinn, D. Phil. is Professor of History at Seton Hall University and Editor-in-Chief of The Chesterton Review. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin and New College Oxford, where he obtained a doctorate in 1986. He has written extensively on Chestertonian themes, is the author of three books The Irish in New Jersey: Four Centuries of American Life (Rutgers University Press, 2004) (winner, New Jersey Studies Academic Alliance, Non-Fictional Book of the Year, 2005); Patronage and Piety: The Politics of English Roman Catholicism, 1850-1900 (Stanford University Press / Macmillan, 1993) and Understanding Northern Ireland (Baseline Books, Manchester, United Kingdom, 1993 and numerous articles and reviews in the field of British and Irish history.
