Is Norway’s “wolf mountain” real?
An image purported to show a mountain range resembling a howling wolf is often released online as if it showed an actual location in Norway:
This is not an authentic photograph of a mountain that looks like a wolf howling at the moon. This is a digital artwork created by artist and photographer Michelle Von Kalben.
Von Kalben originally posted this artwork on his Instagram page in March 2021. In the original caption, Von Kalben notes that this artwork was created by altering the shape of an actual mountain peak in Norway:
Von Kalben wrote:
So the gigantic wolf howled at the moon in the middle of the night 🐺🌕
??
When I first saw the mountain atop Norway, I thought I HAD to make something special out of it. ??
??
I changed the shape of the mountain a bit to make it look more like a wolf to create a more unique and magical scene.
??
Who knows which mountain it is?
The image of ‘Wolf Mountain’ was created from a photo taken by Von Kalben of a mountain peak called Segla on the island of Senja in northern Norway. The original photograph can be seen approximately 30 seconds from the following video:
If for some reason you still have hopes that this mountain of howling wolves is real, maybe the following image will convince you otherwise. On March 31, Von Kalben posted an animated gif of this mountain wolf raising his head to howl at the moon. This gif was posted as an NFT which would sell for 1.50 ETH ($ 5,394.64).
