Oslo healthcare students have digital access to real medical cases – the first in Norway to use the Sectra training portal
LINKÖPING, Sweden, September 22, 2021 / PRNewswire / – International Society for Informatics and Cybersecurity in Medical Imaging Sectra (STO: SECT B) made its medical education platform, Sectra Education Portal, available to Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet). The digital and cloud-based solution will be the first of its kind in Norway, providing teachers and students with access to real medical cases to use in their training. This will help students to be even better prepared for clinical professional life.
“It’s great that we are up and running and that we can take advantage of all the benefits of this platform and the ability to collaborate with clinical practices and other educational institutions. Our radiography program is responsible for managing the planning and training related to the platform, even though it is used in various disciplines, ”says Kari Gerhardsen Vikestad, program director of the OsloMet radiography program.
OsloMet is that of Norway third largest university with some of the best-known professional study programs in the country, including 6,100 students in different health fields. With the implementation of the Sectra training portal, these students now have access to a unique library of clinical cases and cutting-edge visualization tools to advance their clinical learning in a range of programs.
Sectra Education Portal is a cloud-based software-as-a-service solution that educational institutions can use to prepare lectures based on their own cases or on quality-guaranteed clinical cases from the Sectra library. It also enables distance teaching and learning as preparations and lessons can be done online by teachers, and students can study cases on their own computers, tablets or smartphones. When attending classes and studying on campus, OsloMet teachers and students also have access to Sectra’s viewing table, a large touchscreen that enables interactive learning and facilitates group discussions.
“It’s inspiring to see OsloMet leading the way as that of Norway first university to offer their students our unique platform. By familiarizing students with medical images and tools used in real clinical settings, they will have a shorter learning curve and be better prepared when they enter working life, ”said Johan Carlegrim, President of the Medical Education business unit at Sectra.
With anatomy being an area of interest at OsloMet, Sectra products will also be used to enable virtual dissections. This will allow students to gain an in-depth understanding of the anatomy of the body digitally, thereby reducing the need for actual corpses. In combination with a full anatomy atlas accessible through the viewing table and the Sectra educational portal, OsloMet students will get a realistic learning experience and can learn about spatial relationships by comparing 2D visualizations (multiplanar views ) and 3D.
