PRIO invites applications for this course, which will be taught in person in Oslo in June 2022. The deadline for applications is April 18.

This course explores the various roles of time in migration processes, as a key perspective on migration theory. It is suitable for doctoral students in the social sciences and humanities who carry out research on migration-related topics.

The course consists of two parts: one day of online teaching, Monday June 20, and two days on site in Oslo the following week, June 27 and 28. The course is organized in conjunction with the annual IMISCOE conference, Europe’s largest academic conference on migration, which takes place in Oslo from 29 June to 1 July.

The content of the course voluntarily crosses various approaches to the study of time, from quantitative analyzes of time series to ethnographic research on experiential temporalities. This broad scope promotes theoretical sensitivity and versatility. Key concepts of the course include linear time, historical time, biographical time, past, present, future, space-time, flows, trajectories, moments, rhythms, cycles, tempos , trends, synchronicity, conjuncture, disjunction, hope, expectation, life course and generation. The course links these concepts to mobility and immobility, migration processes, transnationalism and the impacts of emigration and immigration. It combines a theoretical focus on time and temporalities with attention to the ways in which temporal dimensions are reflected in key approaches to migration theory. Lecturers draw on their own experience of migration research, across themes, contexts and methods. The expected outcome is that participants develop their analytical awareness and dexterity in addressing the temporal dimensions of migration.

The application deadline for the course is April 18. Please see the full announcement for more information and the application form.
