Records are made to be broken. From the heaviest lifts to the fastest track times, there’s nothing like seeing an athlete do something no one has done before.
When 40 men and women, along with 37 teams, hit the competition trail in Madison, just getting this far is a dream for most CrossFit athletes at their local affiliates, but a few aim for relationships. public records.
Below are the top 5 contenders for this year’s NOBULL CrossFit Games 2022.
CrossFit games titles, career and consecutive – both Men and women
On the hunt: Tia-Clair Toomey. Toomey is already alone atop the women’s podium for the CrossFit Games titles for the women’s division. Then in second place, on the all-time women’s title podium, Annie Thorisdottir and Katrin Davidsdottir with two each, and out of individual competition this year aren’t even in Toomey’s competition anymore. Toomey has in view what no man or woman has yet done.
Call me back: When analysts and commentators talk about the “Michael Jordan” and “Lebron James” of CrossFit, two names most come to mind: Rich Froning Jr. and Mat Fraser. From 2011 to 2014, Rich Froning Jr. set the record with four consecutive titles. Followed shortly after in 2016-20 by Mat Fraser 1-up-ing Froning with five consecutive titles. Like Éowyn’s declaration to the Witch-King, “I am not a man!” from Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Tia-Clair Toomey can declare with six straight titles to the CrossFit Games crowd that she is the reigning queen of CrossFit and has done what no man or woman can did before.
Total CrossFit Games event wins by a rookie – male or female
On the hunt: The Rookie Class. With this Next-Gen class, anything is possible. Just a year ago we saw Mal O’Brien smoking everyone at the 10-1 Wall Walk/Thruster verse event under the lights on the first night in Madison and we won’t forget Gui Malheiros winning the Sprint, the Run/Clean ladder Couplet, and his 305-pound snatch. With athletes succeeding at a younger age and new names in the mix, the spotlight has never been brighter for the new class.
Everyone has their favorite rookie at the Games and who they think will make a statement from Alex Gazan and Alexis Raptis to Spencer Panchik and Dallin Pepper. Will they be able to out-compete female and male veterans to win the most events by a rookie? And can they surpass the historical performances of the past?
Call me back: Currently, the records are held by a select few past and present athletes who excelled in their rookie season at the Games. On the men’s side and all-around title holder, Brent Fikowski won 4 events in his first season, the Ranch Mini Chipper, Climbing Snail, 100% and Rope Chipper to finish 4th and just three points off 3rd place. Among women, the current record is shared by Kaleena Ladeairous, who in 2013 won the first 2,000 meters of the Half Marathon Row (2,000 m and half marathon were scored), Burden Run and Naughty Nancy, as well as Laura Horvath , who in 2018 finished 2nd overall on the podium with wins in The Battleground, Two-Stroke Pull and Aeneas.
Total CrossFit Games Event Attendance – Men
Hunting: Noah Ohlsen: There’s been a lot of talk about the rookie class with the latest CrossFit Games documentary titled Next-Gen, but veterans of the sport keep showing up and showing up. Noah Ohlsen is back at the Games, something other Games veterans can’t say this season with a changing of the guard in 2022. Noah has a chance to grab a record that adds up quickly but doesn’t jump off the page.
Most events. Noah, over the course of 8 seasons so far, has racked up 114 event finishes, with 55% in the Top 10 (this includes finishes in 2020 in a five-man field).
Call me back: To stack up event arrivals, you need to be in the right place at the right time and stick around until Sunday. With big cuts across multiple years, including 2019 and 2020, cutting out the majority of the field on the final day, just having your name on the heat roster is a skill in itself. Ben Smith sits atop the current list, which from 2009 to 2019 has 123 Games finishes. With Ben not at the Games in 2022 and 12 windows on the CrossFit Games scheduleif Noah can stay in the top 30 and stay healthy through the weekend, he could set a new record for longtime Games veterans.
Multiple teams from a single affiliate on the podium – Team Division
On the Hunt: CrossFit Mayhem and CrossFit Oslo: If bringing just one Affiliate Cup team to the Games wasn’t hard enough, CrossFit Mayhem has three and CrossFit Oslo has two.
CrossFit Mayhem Freedom, CrossFit Mayhem Independence and CrossFit Mayhem Justice will all compete in the Games this weekend along with CrossFit Oslo Navy Blue and CrossFit Oslo Purple Red. With the season-long focus on Rich’s Mayhem Freedom vs. Annie Thorisdottir’s CrossFit Reykjavik, the rest of the teams, Mayhem and the two Oslo teams, are battling it out for airtime and looking to make their presence known. Three teams scored the highest possible 600 points in the semi-finals this season, CrossFit Mayhem Freedom, CrossFit Reykjavik and CrossFit Oslo Navy Blue. CrossFit Invictus, CrossFit Mayhem Independence and CrossFit Oslo Purple Red are not too far behind. Oslo Purple Red finished 2nd in three events behind CrossFit Reykjavik in the Lowlands Throwdown Semi-Final. For Purple Red, strength might be their limiter as they finished 18th in the Snatch Ladder event and out of the top tier compared to those other teams. All of these teams have their sights set on the podium, but for CrossFit Mayhem and CrossFit Oslo there may be strength in numbers compared to the Icelandic team.
Call me back: This may sound familiar. That’s because in 2018, it almost happened. Mayhem Freedom won the Team division beating Invictus X and Mayhem Independence finished 4th with 70 points in third place CrossFit OC3. This year, Independence, led by two-time teenage champion Angelo DiCicco, might be a different story. Mayhem is going all out for what is said to be Rich’s senior year. Not only could Rich get his 6th tag team title, giving 10 total championships between the individual and tag team divisions, he and Mayhem could be looking to leave no doubt this time around.
CrossFit Games Youngest athlete on the podium – Women
On the hunt: Mal O’Brien… Emma Lawson and Paige Powers
Coming into the 2021 Games at just 17 and becoming Rookie of the Year, there’s been a lot of talk about what Mal is doing back in his sophomore season. That was increased to 11 when she was brought to HWPO by Mat Fraser and won the 2022 Open. Now she could set a new record by becoming the youngest athlete on the podium ever. Without playing favorites, Mal isn’t the only teenage athlete hoping to step onto the podium at the Games. Paige Powers at 19 and Emma Lawson at 17 both have the opportunity and the fight to shock the world.
Call me back: In 2010, when O’Brien was still in primary school, a young sophomore at the Icelandic Games, Annie Thorisdottir, won four events in total and finished 2nd to Kristan Clever with just 12 points. . It might seem like a familiar roadmap that Mal will follow twelve years later.
