Start-up plans flights between Stewart and Norway – Daily Freeman
NEW WINDSOR, NY – New airline Norse Atlantic Airways has applied to the Federal Aviation Administration for approval to provide service between New York Stewart International Airport and at least one European destination.
The Norway-based carrier aims to launch passenger service between the United States and Europe in the summer of 2022, starting with round-trip service to Oslo from three US airports: Stewart, Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles.
The airline plans to use Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes.
Norse Atlantic would be the first airline to offer flights between Stewart and Europe since Norwegian Air withdrew from Stewart in the summer of 2019 after only two years of service. Norwegian cited the grounding of Boeing 737 Max jets after two fatal crashes with that aircraft as the reason for the reduction. From Stewart, Norwegian flew mainly to Ireland.
Norse Atlantic founder and CEO Bjorn Tore Larsen told Mid-Hudson News that Stewart “is an attractive and efficient airport serving greater New York City, which has a huge catchment area of several million customers.”
“We are grateful for the constructive dialogue with the airport management and the enthusiasm they have shown about the potential service to Oslo,” said Larsen.
He also said that Norse Atlantic aims to create “good paying jobs for Americans”.
Norse would be the first airline to use Stewart’s new international arrivals building, originally designed to accommodate Norwegian Air flights.
Stewart is operated by the New York and New Jersey Port Authority, which also operates three major airports in the New York area.
