Study in Norway with Keiandra Harper

Keiandra Harper, third year student at ETSU, always hoped to be able to travel the world to study, expand her surroundings and absorb cultural traditions. She currently resides in a town in southern Norway called Kristiansand, best known for its beautiful natural lands and rich history.
Harper initially decided to study abroad as a freshman in the fall of 2019. Upon receiving the Benjamin A. Gilman International Fellowship, she initially planned to take a summer course in Rwanda, located in East Africa. Sadly, as the coronavirus pandemic took the world by storm, it became clear to her that this was no longer a viable option.
âMy advisers at ETSU have helped me identify ways to expand the possibility of studying abroad,â said Harper. âThe pandemic added a lot of additional planning and logistics, but it was worth it. “
Now, after several months of waiting for the special occasion, Harper starts her days going to class on the chilly, chilly Kristiansand mornings.
She meets friends in the afternoon where they sometimes take a midday break for coffee, snacks and relax, also known as Swedish âfikaâ. Later, she spends her evenings participating with campus organizations and finding fun things to do around town.
She says that while studying abroad hasn’t necessarily changed her worldview, it has certainly broadened her, challenging her to think in a way that’s new to her. Traveling to Norway opened her eyes to various new experiences and traditions. One of the most exciting experiences, she claims, was bungee jumping 187 feet above a waterfall-fed gorge.
âI am grateful to the international student community here as it has given me the opportunity to learn about many different perspectives from people around the world,â said Harper.
