TKMS to build six 212CD-type submarines for Germany and Norway
thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) was commissioned to build six new Type 212 Common Design (CD) submarines for the Norwegian and German navies.
Worth around 5.5 billion euros, the contracts concern the delivery of two 212CD submarines to Germany and the other four to Norway.
TKMS CEO Rolf Wirtz said: “The order for 212CD is an important milestone.
“The Norwegian and German navies are building the most modern submarines in the world, international and industrial teamwork will continuously shape cooperation in the maritime sector, and we have created a use of capabilities for our business.”
TKMS will begin construction on the first ship in 2023. Norway is expected to take delivery of the first of its four submarines in 2029.
Germany will receive its two ships in 2032 and 2034.
The 73 m long 212CD submarine will have a beam of 10 m and a surface displacement of 2,500 m³.
TKMS has already started the preparatory work for the order with the construction of a new shipbuilding hall at its shipyard.
Industrial cooperation between Germany and Norway is the basis of the 212CD project.
The new submarines are based on the design of the 212A type submarines, which will be further developed incorporating advanced technologies. Type 212A vessels are already in service in Germany and Italy.
In addition, TKMS has signed contracts with its Norwegian industrial partner Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace for the supply of the ORCCA combat system for the six ships and the Naval Strike Missile (NSM).
In October 2017, Kongsberg and TKMS established a new joint venture (JV) known as kta Naval Systems.
Based on the expertise and joint products of JV partners, kta naval systems, along with its ORCCA Combat Systems family of products, will exclusively develop, manufacture and maintain all combat systems for TKMS.
Kongsberg CEO Geir Håøy said: “Deliveries will last until the 2030s and are an important and strategic step that strengthens our presence in Europe with Germany as an important and close partner.
“With this new extended industrial cooperation, the partnership is taken to a new level which will be of great importance for technological development and value creation in Norway.”
