UN commends PNoy for contribution and service to PH – Philippine Canadian Inquirer
MANILA– The United Nations (UN) has lauded former President Benigno Aquino III for his contribution and service to the Philippines as she joins the nation in mourning the death on Thursday.
In a statement, United Nations Resident Coordinator in the Philippines, Gustavo Gonzalez, said: “On behalf of the United Nations, I offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Aquino.
“We join with the Filipino people in honoring their contribution and service to the country,” he said.
The UN Philippines also attached a photo of Aquino when he addressed the 65th UN General Assembly in 2010.
At the time, Aquino said that the Philippines would not remain entirely dependent on the “broad masses of the developed world” but, in fact, would be active in their own development through their efforts in the Group of 77 and initiatives. aimed at strengthening South-South cooperation. and collective economic interests.
Under his presidency, the Philippines also initiated and overwhelmingly won an arbitration case against China’s excessive claims in the South China Sea.
Pursued under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the government said the landmark 2016 ruling is now part of international law to address issues of historic rights and maritime rights in the South China Sea.
Tributes also poured in from members of the Philippine diplomatic community who expressed their heartfelt condolences to the nation and the bereaved family of Aquino.
Norwegian Ambassador Bjørn Jahnsen said the Embassy is always grateful for the partnership between Norway and the Philippines under his tenure.
“On behalf of the Norwegian Embassy in Manila, I offer our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of former President Benigno Aquino III at this difficult time. We are saddened by the passing of President Aquino and will always be grateful for our partnership, ”he said on Twitter.

The Czech embassy in Manila for its part welcomed the agreements concluded between the two nations during its presidency, in particular on culture and education.
“The Czech Embassy in Manila wishes to express its deepest condolences to the Filipino people and the bereaved family of former President Benigno” Noynoy “Aquino III,” he said.
“New cultural agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation in the fields of culture, education, science and sports were signed during his tenure and he also welcomed the former first deputy prime minister and minister Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Mr. Karel Schwarzenberg in 2012, he added.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Embassy in Manila sent condolences via Twitter.
“The Malaysian Embassy is deeply saddened by the death of His Excellency Benigno Simeon Cojuangco Aquino, III the 15th President of the Republic of the Philippines,” he said.
Aquino, the only son of pro-democracy icons Benigno Aquino Jr. and former President Corazon Aquino, died of kidney failure secondary to diabetes on the morning of June 24.
