Volkswagen Group replaces Tesla in Norway, as Tesla dominates brand rankings
Following our quarterly report on electric vehicle sales in the UK and our previous monthly sales reports for the whole of Europe (see here, here, here and here), the Netherlands, Italy , Germany, France and China, it’s time to get started in the Nordic countries. – well, most.
In this report, I will quickly review the brands and automotive groups or alliances that have the most BEV * sales in Norway, the most famous of BEV markets, given that 77.5% of new vehicle sales are now fully electric. I will also post charts and reviews on top selling BEV models. (* BEVs are 100% battery-powered vehicles that do not use gasoline / gasoline or diesel.)
BEV bestsellers in Norway
In terms of sales of automotive groups or alliances, the Volkswagen group was ahead of Tesla in the third quarter (25.9% against 23.4%). No one else was close to these two. Hyundai-Kia finished with 11% of BEV sales for the quarter, Stellantis 8.7% and Ford 7.2%. No other automotive group / alliance even had a 4.5% market share.
Naturally, given that the Volkswagen Group is a collection of different brands / companies and Tesla is just one, that means Tesla is far ahead of the brand rankings. As before, Tesla accounted for 23.4% of BEV sales in Norway in the third quarter. The Volkswagen group took the next two places, with Volkswagen in second (10.3% of BEV sales in Norway in the quarter) and Audi in third (8.9%).
Hyundai, Ford and Škoda each had half-decent performances, accounting for 8.2%, 7.2% and 5.9% of market sales in the third quarter, respectively. (Note that Škoda is yet another Volkswagen Group company.) After that, the market fell a bit, dropping well below 5% market share per brand.
Top BEV models in Norway
And the models? We actually reported on the patterns earlier this month, but here’s a new graphic to close the Norwegian section of this article:
Obviously, and unsurprisingly, the Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3 dominated the quarter (14.5% and 8.9% of the BEV market in Q3), followed – quite surprising – by the Ford Mustang Mach-E in third position with 7.2% of the market! Norwegians seem to really like American electric vehicles, technical and fun! The Volkswagen ID.4 grabbed 4th place (rightly so), but I expect it to have a lot of quarters on the podium. It held 5.4% of the market during the quarter. Then you have the new Hyundai IONIQ 5 in 5th position (again, apparently a proper ranking given the model name). It held 5.1% of the market, a little more than the 4.9% of the Škoda Enyaq n ° 6.
A key takeaway from the list, besides the leaders, is the large number of Volkswagen Group models in the top 10: VW ID.4, Škoda Enyaq, VW ID.3, Audi e-tron, Audi e-tron Q4 . In a different but similar way, you have some reliable heavyweights – the Hyundai IONIQ 5 in 5th, a new face but sure to be a regular near the top of the charts; the # 12 Hyundai Kona EV, our 2019 CleanTechnica Car of the Year and one of the most consistent top 10 or top 20 models in all markets; and the # 18 Kia Niro EV, finalist of this 2019 competition. In fact, these models often rank higher in the country sales charts. The Hyundai-Kia partnership claimed 3rd place in the group standings, but if it started rolling out more models like the Volkswagen group is doing, Be careful, Hyundai-Kia could also aim for No. 1 rankings!
